This illustration is of a Mk1 Ford Lotus Cortina racing against another Cortina and a Ford Anglia. These cars were racing at a Classic Touring Car Racing Club event at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent.
The Ford Lotus Cortina was developed by Colin Chapman for Ford to beat all comers in saloon car racing. Based on the standard car the Lotus version it included a twin-cam version of the Ford Kent engine. The rear leaf-spring suspension was replaced so the axle was sprung on twin coil-over-damper units. The car dominated saloon car racing and also rallying in the hands of the biggest stars in motorsport. Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Sir John Whitmore and Roger Clark took many wins at the wheel of a Lotus Cortina.
